Top 10 Container Ship Operators in the World

Maritime transportation is an essential link in every supply chain.

Massive ships transport thousands of loaded containers around the world every week, supporting the flow of goods via water.

Taking a look at all the container ship operators in the world, the following graph illustrates the Top 10 companies, which represents 81% of the share, per Alphaliner.

APM-Maersk is leading the list, with a capacity of 3,963,399 TEUs and 654 ships (315 owned or 339 chartered), per Alphaliner.

As of today, globally, there are 23,796,501 TEU, and 287,471,500 DWT (Alphaliner).

I've created an info-graphic with these and other facts; check it out below.

If you are new to this interesting subject, let me introduce you to two of the terms that were used in this publication: TEU and DWT. Definitions for both, are included below.

As defined in the glossary shared by The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals,

  • TEU or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit is the standard unit for counting containers of various capacities and for describing the capacities of container ships or terminals. One 20 foot ISO container equals 1 TEU. One 40 foot ISO container equals two TEU. A 20-foot container is typically 8.5 feet tall and 8 feet wide outside and has an internal capacity of 1170 square feet.

  • DWT or DeadWeight Tonnage is the total lifting capacity of a ship expressed in tons of 2,240 lbs. It is the difference between the displacement light (without cargo, passengers, fuel, etc.) and the displacement loaded.

The maritime industry is just a portion of a robust supply chain. Its invaluable contribution must recognize every day.

We will be sharing more awesome facts about other links of the supply chain in further publications!!

Don't miss them!!
